Early Life and Military Career

Juan Vicente Gómez was born into a prominent Andean landowning family in La Mulera, Venezuela, in 1857.

He grew up as an illiterate cattle herder of mostly indigenous descent. In 1882, following his father's death, he became the head of his family. Three years later, he met Cipriano Castro, who appointed him as colonel of the autonomous army of the state of Táchira.

In 1892, former President Joaquín Crespo led an armed rebellion against Castro, who was unable to suppress it.
