Long before her famous son, Walter Payton, became known to millions as “Sweetness,” Alyne Payton was known as the original version.
“Just like every mother, she was proud of her kids, regardless of what they are doing or what they become,” her son Eddie Payton said.
“The love that she had is the kind of love that we will never know.”
Mrs. Payton, 87, died Monday, May 6, in Jackson, Miss., after an extended illness.
She will be buried in Columbia, Miss, next to the grave of her husband, Edward, who died in 1979.

Walter Payton, the Chicago Bears Hall of Fame running back, died Nov. 1, 1999, from a rare liver disease at age 45.
“We are going to bury Walter’s ashes with her. That’s what she wanted,” Eddie, Walter’s older brother, told the Tribune.

Payton grew up in Harmony, Miss., a small rural community where she picked cotton as a child before doing domestic work as early as age 12.
