On January 16, 1973, after eight years together, Fonda and Vadim were officially over. In her 2005 autobiography, "My Life So Far", the 81-year-old actress revealed that the director's drinking and gambling was an issue.

On September 28, 1968, the two welcomed their first child, daughter Vanessa Vadim.
However, the award-winning actress eventually decided to divorce Vadim. In her memoir, she wrote:
"I had put so much into creating a life with him, fitting into his life, that I had left myself behind."
